Net Impact Bentley and the Graduate Women’s Leadership Organization are excited to announce our upcoming panel discussion on social entrepreneurship: “Social Enterprise: Using the Power of Business to Improve Lives.” Join us to hear four women speak about their experiences founding and running mission-driven businesses. Siiri Morley of Prosperity Candle, Anne O’Loughlin of Autonomie Project, and Alexis Schroeder & Jeanne Dasarro of the New Prosperity Initiative will discuss their careers, the social missions of their businesses, and the innovative business models that they use to accomplish them.

This year, the Bentley Chapter of Net Impact will begin planning its Board Fellows program, to be launched in the 2011-2012 academic year. We need your help!

The Board Fellows program seeks to place graduate business students on the boards of directors of local non-profits. Through this arrangement graduate students gain valuable experience in non-profit governance and the non-profits benefit from the business skills brought by the students. Hello Chapter Members,

Those of you who attended either of our kickoff meetings heard us talk about the idea of bringing the MBA Oath to Bentley. More information can be found at http://www.theoathproject.org/. We would like to adapt the Oath to incorporate all graduate degrees granted at Bentley.

The basic idea behind the Oath is similar to that of the Hippocratic Oath taken by doctors. Business practitioners have a responsibility to practice their professions in a manner that considers the impact of their actions on others. Doctors must protect their patients, but people in business must consider the needs of all stakeholders: employees, customers, the greater community, the environment.

The Oath Project hopes that by making a public commitment, signers of the Oath will remember such ideas as “My decisions affect the well-being of individuals inside and outside my enterprise, today and tomorrow,” and will adhere to such pledges as “I will manage my enterprise with loyalty and care, and will not advance my personal interests at the expense of my enterprise or society,” when faced with difficult decisions in business.

We would like feedback from the Bentley community on the value of such an oath.

- Would signing the Oath make a real difference in the way Bentley graduates conduct themselves after leaving school?

- Does the Bentley curriculum prepare students to make such a pledge?

- What kind of support could the school or alumni offer that would make it easier to uphold the Oath?

Join Boston area Net Impact chapters and the Progressive Business Leaders Network for an exciting event to be held at MIT’s Sloan School of Management on Wednesday, November 17.  Hear from CEO’s of two local for-profit social entrepreneurship enterprises and have a chance to meet and network with other area business students. Do you know how to make the world a better place through business? Net Impact and the Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative (GRLI) are sponsoring a team-based competition for innovative answers to the question: “How can next generation leaders contribute to the development of globally responsible leadership?” Ideas should be community-based and presented in any electronic format. If you have a great idea, your submission could win your team an all-expenses-paid trip to Australia to present your project to the GRLI General Assembly.
GRLI is an international organization that describes its vision as “a worldwide network of companies and learning institutions characterised by vast action and thorough exchange of learning. GRLI’s mission is to ‘develop a next generation of responsible leaders’ through collective and individual actions.”
Teams of 2-3 must submit their project electronically by December 1, 2010.  See The GRLI & Net Impact Challenge 2010 for more details on the competition.

We want to let you know about a couple of great upcoming events sponsored by Net Impact chapters at other Massachusetts schools:

On Saturday, October 23, Net Impact at UMass Amherst is presenting “The Business of Sustainability: Shifting the Corporate Agenda.” This event will feature a panel discussion “focused on how sustainability is becoming a competitive advantage and differentiator for companies across industries,” as well as a great opportunity to network with like-minded students and professionals over breakfast. On Saturday, October 30, the undergraduate chapter of Net Impact at Northeastern University will be co-hosting “ForSE 2010: the Forum for Social Entrepreneurs,” a full day conference that will bring together expert panelists to discuss social enterprise in the spheres of health, education, technology, and sustainability. Details and registration information can be found at www.forumse.org. The event will also feature a pitch contest for business ideas with a social impact. Entries will be accepted until October 21 and information can be found at Pitch SE Competition.
