Research Workshop a Success!

Published by at 12:14 AM under Academics, Events, New Students, Resources, Workshops

Thank you SOOO much to C.B. Loeb for a great workshop on Researching & Managing Sources!!!! We had about 10 people join us in Smith 122, and at least 6 students participate online.    We had a lot of student participation and some great questions and discussion about how to be most effective with research.  Short answer: Find a set of tools and a method that works best for you, since everyone is a little different.

C. B. will be sharing her materials online.  Look for them to be attached to this post sometime early next week.

For those who werw not able to attend the session, it was recorded and is available for watching through Centra.  Simply click the link below, enter your email address and go from there.

Did you attend?  Let us know what you thought about the workshop in the comments.

Our next event:

Sketching & Ideation

Wed., Oct. 5 @ 7:30 – 9:30 PM in TBD rm. (likely Smith 122 w/ remote support)

Join RISD alumna, IDCC adjunct, current MSHFID student, and hFIDO Member-at-Large Martha Ware for a workshop on sketching and ideation. Martha brings her illustration background to bear to help us understand the best ways to quickly convey our ideas. In this crash course in visualization you’ll find out how to think spatially, how to effectively redirect a stymied meeting with a few quick sketches on the white board, and where to look for the best tutorials to supplement your digital creative experience. Bring your laptop, unlined paper or a sketchbook, pencils, pens and an eraser to this fun and interactive class!

See you there!

The research workshop was incredibly useful!! Knowing what tools are available and learning from your experience has made me feel that I’m starting off on the right foot with my research. Thank you to C.B.!

I found the workshop to be tremendously helpful. CB (and Susan!) shared a wealth of really practical research advice. I came out of the workshop feeling more confident and a lot less bewildered. Thank you so much!

Thank you all for the great workshop! So much I didn’t know that I didn’t know.

I listened to the recording and have a couple of questions

Has anyone tried Scrivener? How does it compare to Mendeley?

Also, where can I get a copy of the handouts?

    Thanks again!

Hi guys. So glad people found the discussion useful. SCampbell – I’m afraid I have not tried Scrivenger. But if you do, please share your experience and feedback so we can keep the discussion going. I have posted the first installment of the slides today. You can download them from the hFIDO home page. Stay tuned for more. – CB

If it helps, CB – many of the non-HFID grad and – particularly – PhD students who I know absolutely swear by Scrivener (Mac-only)…
